South Dakota State Representative Lee Qualm discusses why and how he touched off a fight when he submitted a “medical freedom” bill calling for the overturn of mandatory vaccinations for all children in his state’s school system. He lost, but listening to the emotionally charged witnesses at the hearing where the pros and cons of his bill were discussed, it was clear that with regard to the vax/anti-vax debate what was and is urgently needed on both sides are the voices of honest, unbiased experts willing to work together to come up with policies that address the concerns of both sides.
